VoIP Myths

I have heard that VoIP quality is bad

WRONG
For many years VoIP has been used internally with a lot companies, but they decided to terminate their VoIP connection before it left the building, allowing all calls to travel over standard PSTN/ISDN lines. The reason for doing this was their internet connections were not fast or reliable enough. Today we have broadband internet which is reliable, this means that we can allow our calls to travel over the internet. If you don’t believe us, give us a call all our networks are running on VoIP and a single telephone conversation will demonstrate this to you. Alternatively, speak to us about an Engineer Demonstration or Trial.
Our higher end VoIP deployments can benefit from HD wideband audio which offers CD call quality which far exceeds traditional phone system quality.

VoIP isn’t widely used

WRONG
VoIP is in fact used by more people than you think, most large companies utilise a VoIP system, but don’t use it over the internet. Only lately have internet speeds caught up to allow more companies use VoIP over the internet (which is newer), but still achieving a substantial growth in the market.

There are only benefits from VoIP – 2 – VoIP systems

WRONG
VoIP -2-VoIP calls are free yes, but due to the rapid uptake of VoIP and wholesale availability of connections in to the PSTN, it is possible to get cheaper calls worldwide to none VoIP customers.

VoIP is unreliable

WRONG
VoIP is as good as the company that provides it. We have experienced badly setup VoIP systems which have not made good allowances for VoIP traffic, and have resulted in giving customer’s a terrible opinion of VoIP. However, if the VoIP is deployed correctly it can be just as reliable. One of the main things is bandwidth, have a look at our VoIP calculator, which estimates the VoIP traffic needed.

VoIP is complicated

WRONG
VoIP is different, very different. Because of this there is new terminology and considerations. As the same with many industries, traditional telephone providers need to learn how to move with technology and embrace the digital advantages, they will find it more difficult to provide competitive feature rich services.

Switching to VoIP is a huge investment

WRONG
When looking at deploying a VoIP system is it important to take into account a wide range of considerations. This is because VoIP can be described as a convergent technology which takes advantage and unifies many of areas of communication. It is important to value the customers experience when waiting in a call queue, or been able to get in touch with who they want through smart call routing. Because of this we offer two deployments of VoIP,

  • In-house which allows you to own the entire system, provides high flexibility and good reliability, and minimal ongoing costs.
  • Hosted Switchboard which is entirely service based, no PBX equipment needs to be installed, just telephones which can be plugged into any broadband connection and away you go.
These system has minimal setup costs.

VoIP systems are constantly changing and upgrading is very expensive

WRONG
The world of VoIP is very exciting, there are lots of new ideas and features to provide the management, operators, staff and customers. However, these changes are in the software domain, meaning that any properly chosen hardware has a long life expectancy due to software upgrades.

You must get new phone numbers to use VoIP

WRONG
We can port numbers from BT, Pipex, Virgin Media (Telewest/ NTL/Eurobell), VoIP or Energi. If we don’t have your current provider, please ask us.

VoIP is Skype

WRONG
Skype is a type of VoIP, but not the same technology as we use. Our systems are based around the industry standard SIP protocol, which has been proven and deployed on scales much larger than Skype.

It’s difficult to change over to a VoIP system

WRONG
Using proven implementation techniques we can provide a direct, phased or parallel implementation into a new VoIP system, at many levels. This ensured reliability and availability during the entire migration procedure.

We recommend you using a speed tester and VoIP calculator, to find out how much you have available and are likely to use.
